In a groundbreaking move for women's sports, the Next Collegiate League (NCL) set itself apart in 2024 by requiring its women’s lacrosse athletes to play in full equipment, mirroring the standards established in the men’s league. This progressive approach not only enhances the level of competition but also promotes player safety and elevates the sport's visibility.

While most women’s lacrosse leagues typically feature a more lenient equipment policy, often allowing players to compete with less protective gear, the NCL is committed to fostering a playing environment that prioritizes athletes’ safety and overall performance. By adopting a full equipment standard, which includes helmets, gloves, and padded protective gear, the NCL allows its female athletes to engage in a style of play that is both aggressive and skillful without compromising safety.

This decision coincided with the NCL's expansion in 2024 to add a Women's Division in Year 3 of the league's existence, welcoming 6 programs into the NCL fold. This collection of clubs included Hampton, Morgan State, Norfolk State, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Coppin State, and Bowie State. The league expanded then a team further when Lincon University had a women's club team join the ranks in 2025.

NCL Commissioner Liam Banks said, “We are proud to lead the way in women’s lacrosse by emphasizing the importance of safety and competitiveness. By equipping our players with full gear, we are empowering them to push their limits and showcase their talents in a way that reflects the intensity and excitement of the game.”

The NCL’s commitment to full equipment play also serves as a vital step toward breaking down stereotypes and elevating the profile of women’s sports. The league actively promotes its female athletes, providing them with the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at the highest levels, thus inspiring future generations of players.

As the NCL prepares for its upcoming season, the spotlight on its women’s teams is brighter than ever. Fans can look forward to fast-paced, exhilarating games, complete with the thrills and excitement that full equipment play brings.

Stay tuned for the season opener on April 18th and be part of this historic moment in women’s lacrosse as the NCL continues to blaze trails and redefine the game.
